Your end-of-semester bucket list: Make the most of living in University Housing
As the semester starts to wind down, I know how easy it is to get caught up in finals, packing and thinking about heading home. I’ve been in that exact mindset before.
Everything starts to feel rushed, like you’re just trying to make it to the finish line.
But one thing I’ve learned from living in University Housing is that these last few weeks go by faster than you expect. It’s worth being intentional about how you spend them.
Before you leave, give yourself the chance to enjoy what’s still happening around you and soak in the environment you’ve called home all semester.
Enjoy the Energy of Campus
One thing I always try to do at this time of year is go to at least one more Housing event before the semester ends.
There’s always something going on, whether it’s the Ike Outdoor Event with lots of food and activities, an Inclusion & Leadership program, something creative like the Reading Day Build-A-Book or other hall-sponsored events you’ll see on the Housing events calendar. These events are more than just something to put on your schedule.
They’re opportunities to step away from the stress, meet new people and be part of the community that makes your residence hall feel like more than just a place to live.
Outside of Housing, campus still has a lot of energy this time of year.
Events like the Illini Union’s annual Spring Jam bring everyone together in a way that just feels different. It’s one of those moments where you can look around and really take in how many people are sharing the same experience as you. Music, friends and the atmosphere all come together, and it becomes something you’ll remember long after the semester ends.
One thing that I still enjoy is going on trips with my friends on the VeoRides to go to a campus event or even just to explore.
There’s something about riding across campus, especially when the weather finally starts to warm up, that makes everything feel a little lighter. Sometimes we don’t even have a set destination. We just go.
And that’s the beauty of living in University Housing. You’re already in a central location where everything feels accessible.
Whether you’re hopping on a VeoRide, catching an MTD bus or just walking with friends, you’re never far from something to do. Take advantage of that convenience while you can.
Visit a spot on campus you haven’t been to yet. Go back to a place that became your favorite during the semester.
Even something as simple as grabbing food together or sitting outside on the Quad can turn into a moment you remember.
For me, one place that really became special was sitting out on the Quad with my friends after a long day of classes. It wasn’t anything big, but those moments of just talking, laughing and taking a break from everything are what I’ll remember the most.
Reflect on Your Growth
I also think it’s important to slow down and appreciate the smaller, everyday moments before you leave.
Spend time in your lounge one more time, even if it’s just for a quick conversation. Check in with your neighbors or floormates. Sit outside and enjoy the weather.
Take pictures with your roommates, not just the posed ones but the candid moments, too. These are the experiences that really define your time in the residence halls. As you start thinking about Move-Out, this is also a good time to reflect.
Think about where you were at the beginning of the semester and where you are now.
The growth, the challenges, the friendships and even the routines you built all happened within this space.
University Housing isn’t just where you stayed. It’s where a lot of your college experience took place. So before you pack everything up and head out, make your own end-of-semester bucket list.
Go to one more event. Try something new. Take that spontaneous trip across campus. Spend intentional time with your people. Say yes to something you normally wouldn’t.
Close out your semester in a way that feels meaningful to you.
Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.
