Break Housing

Staying on campus over break?

We offer housing options in both Champaign and Urbana for Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer breaks.

If you are staying in an undergraduate residence hall during a break period, regardless of location, you will be required to complete a break housing contract. The rate for break housing is $40 per night, and meals will not be available.

Students living in Illinois Street Residence Halls (ISR), Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Halls (PAR), Bousfield Hall, Snyder Hall* and Wassaja Hall are permitted to remain in their own rooms for all breaks. Students needing break housing accommodations who do not live in one of these halls will be assigned to converted lounge spaces in ISR, PAR or Snyder Hall.

*Due to unforeseen circumstances, Snyder Hall will not be available during Winter Break.

Our graduate upper-division halls, Sherman and Daniels, are open over the breaks during the school year, and residents currently living there do not need to apply for break housing. Sherman and Daniels residents can find information related to services over breaks, guidance for those who may be leaving for all or part of a break and move-out information for those who will not be returning on the Break Housing Checklist page.

Fall Break 2023

Residence halls close at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 18. If your transportation is later than this time, you are welcome to wait in the lobbies of Snyder, PAR, ISR or the Illini Union.

• Accommodations will be available November 18 – 25, 2023.
• The deadline to cancel the break housing contract is 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
• Students must apply for Fall Break housing by 10 a.m. on Friday, November 17, 2023. After 10 a.m., students should visit the ISR, PAR or Snyder front desks to complete a break housing contract.
• Fall Break housing will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2023.
• Last meal served before Fall Break will be lunch on Saturday, November 18, 2023.
• Undergraduate halls will close for Fall Break at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 18, and reopen at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2023.
• The Fall Break 2023 Housing Contract will be made available through the Contract Portal on October 9, 2023.

Returning from Fall Break

The residence halls will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 25.

• Remember to return with your i-card and room key. 
• Select retail locations will open at 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 26. 
• SDRP will open on Sunday, November 26 at 3 p.m. 
• All dining and retail locations will resume their regular meal schedules on Monday, November 27.

Winter Break 2023

Residence halls close at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 16. If your transportation is later than this time, you are welcome to wait in the lobbies of Nugent, PAR, ISR or the Illini Union.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Snyder Hall will not be available during Winter Break.

If there is an empty space in your room, please make sure you are only occupying your assigned space/side of the room before you leave for Winter Break.

• Accommodations will be available December 16, 2023 – January 10, 2024.
• The deadline to cancel the break housing contract is 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2023.
• Students must apply for Winter Break housing by 10 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023. After 10 a.m., students should visit the ISR or Nugent front desks to complete a break housing contract.
• Winter Break housing will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2023.
• Last meal served before Winter Break will be dinner on Friday, December 15, 2023.
• Undergraduate halls will close for Winter Break at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2023, and reopen at 8 a.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
• Students needing to arrive before Sunday, January 14, will be able to return beginning at noon on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 (early arrival fees of $40/night will apply, no meals available).
• The Winter Break 2023 Housing Contract will be made available through the Contract Portal on October 30, 2023.

Returning from Winter Break 

The residence halls will open at 8 a.m. on Sunday, January 14.

You may arrive beginning at noon on Wednesday, January 10. Early arrival fees of $40/night will apply, and meals will not be available.

• Remember to return with your i-card and room key. 
• Select retail locations will resume regular hours on Monday, January 15.
• SDRP will open on Monday, January 15 at 9 a.m. 
• All dining and retail locations will resume their regular meal schedules on Tuesday, January 16.

Spring Break 2024

• Accommodations will be available March 9 – March 17, 2024.
• The deadline to cancel the break housing contract is 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
• Students must apply for Spring Break housing by 10 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2023. After 10 a.m., students should visit the ISR, PAR or Snyder front desks to complete a break housing contract.
• Spring Break housing will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2024.
• Last meal served before Spring Break will be lunch on Saturday, March 9, 2024.
• Undergraduate halls will close for Spring Break at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, and reopen at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2024.
• The Spring Break 2024 Housing Contract will be made available through the Contract Portal on January 22, 2024.

Returning from Spring Break 

• Remember to return with your i-card and room key. 
• Select retail locations will resume regular hours on Sunday, March 17.
• ISR Programmatic spaces will open on Sunday, March 17 at 9 a.m. and SDRP will open on Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m. 
• All dining and retail locations will resume their regular meal schedules on Monday, March 18.
• Residence Hall Libraries (IKE and ISR) will open on Monday, March 18 at noon. 

Summer Housing

Complete a Summer Housing Contract

If you are a University of Illinois undergraduate or graduate student and have a University Identification Number (UIN), you are eligible for summer housing. Summer housing is offered in Daniels Hall and is available between May 12 and Aug. 4, 2024. Students should apply at least two business days before their requested summer arrival date. Assignments are not made during weekends or holidays. Due to an increase in summer housing reservations, students may not receive their first room type preference to the high demand for summer housing.

Daniels Hall is an air-conditioned residence hall located on Green Street near the Illini Union. 

Summer housing is charged on a per-night basis and the rate depends on the room type. Additionally, a stay of at least 7 consecutive nights is required for summer housing.

Summer 2024 Housing in Daniels Hall (May 12 – Aug. 4): 

No prorated rates are available. All rates are subject to change. All remaining charges and balances will be billed through your University Student Account.

Cancellations

To cancel without incurring a cancellation fee, you must notify the Housing Information Office in writing at least 14 calendar days before your scheduled move-in date.

• Cancelling with at least 14 days’ notice: Log back into the portal and click the red "Cancel Contract" button.
• Cancelling with 13 to 1 days’ notice: Complete the contract cancellation request. Failure to fulfill the terms of the agreed reservation will result in a cancellation fee of a 7-night minimum (at the single private bath rate of $322 USD). 
• Cancelling on the start date or after: Complete the contract cancellation request. If you cancel after your contract has begun, you will not be eligible for a refund or proration of the remaining portion of your contract. Payment for the entirety of your contracted reservation is required regardless of early departure. 

Dining with University Housing

Meal plans through University Housing will not be available during Summer 2024. University Dining options will be limited.

Summer Housing Move-Out
