Software Updates

Every once in a while, your device may start nagging you about downloading updates. And it will keep asking you until you give in. Save yourself the trouble and update the first time it asks you to! Software updates for your device fix bugs and patch vulnerabilities in your system, which generally means less crashing and better security. Just like procrastinating on schoolwork, putting off updates usually does not end well, and may give you more hassle than necessary.

Steps to update software for your operating system are below:

Amazon Fire Phone

  1. From the Home screen, swipe down form the top of the screen (or swivel your phone to open the Quick Actions panel)
  2. Select the Settings icon
  3. Select Device
  4. Select Install system updates
  5. Select Check Now
  6. If there is a new update, the phone will download it automatically
  7. Select Install System Update after the update is downloaded

Amazon Kindle

  1. Determine your current software version to see if you already have the latest update
    1. From Home, select the Menu icon
    2. Select Settings
    3. Select the Menu icon
    4. Select Device Info
    5. Look at the Firmware Version
  2. Go to Fire & Kindle Software Updates and download the applicable software update file
  3. Transfer the software update file to your Kindle device
    1. Turn on your Kindle and connect it to your computer using the USB cable
    2. Move the file from your computer onto the Kindle drive without putting it into a folder
  4. After the file has been completely transferred, eject the Kindle safely from your computer
  5. Disconnect the USB cable from your Kindle and computer
  6. From Home, select the Menu icon
  7. Select Settings
  8. Select the Menu icon
  9. Select Update Your Kindle
  10. Select OK

Amazon Kindle Fire

  1. Fully charge your tablet and connect it to a wireless network
  2. Swipe down from the top of the screen
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select Device Options
  5. Select System Updates
  6. Select Check Now
  7. If there is a new update, your tablet will download it automatically
  8. Select Update after the update is downloaded

Android 4.1+

  1. Press the Home button
  2. Press the Menu button
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select About phone or About tablet or About device
  5. Select Software updates
  6. Select Check for updates
  7. If there is a new update, your device will download it automatically
  8. Select Restart & Install after the update is downloaded

Blackberry 10+

  1. From the Home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Software Updates
  4. Select Check for Updates
  5. If there is a new update, select Update
  6. After the update is downloaded, select Restart Device

Chrome OS

  1. Click the status area in the lower-right corner where your account picture appears
  2. Select Settings
  3. At the top of the page that opens, select About Chrome OS
  4. In the "About" window that appears, select Check for and apply updates

Firefox OS

  1. Tap on the Settings app on your device
  2. Under "Device", select Device information
  3. On the "Device information" screen, select Check now
  4. If an update is available, it will appear in your notification bar at the top of the screen in a few moments
  5. Tap on the notification to begin the download and installation process

iOS 7+

  1. Plug your device into a power source
  2. Launch the Settings app
  3. Select General from the left panel
  4. Select Software Update
  5. If there is an new update, select Download and Install
  6. Select Install

OS X 10.8+

  1. Select the Apple logo in the menu bar
  2. Select App Store…
  3. Select Updates at the top of the App Store window
  4. Select Update next to an item to update it

Windows 7

  1. Select the Start button
  2. Type "Windows Update" and select Windows Update
  3. In the left pane, select Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer
  4. If you see a message telling you that important updates are available, or telling you to review important updates, click the message to view and select the important updates to install
  5. In the list select important updates
  6. Select OK
  7. Select Install updates
  8. Select Finish if the update requires it

Windows 8+

  1. Open the charms bar by swiping from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up)
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Change PC settings
  4. Select Update and recovery
  5. Select Check now
  6. If updates are found, select Install updates
  7. Select Finish if the update requires it

Windows Phone 8+

  1. Plug your phone into a power source
  2. Launch the Settings app
  3. Select Phone update
  4. Select Check for updates
  5. Select Download
  6. Select Show details
  7. Select Install
  8. After your phone restarts and migrates your settings, tap Done
