Improve Wireless Connection

Update wireless card driver

Identify your wireless card

  1. From the Start screen, type "Device Manager" and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the tree Network adapters.
  3. Find the network adapter with "Wireless", "WLAN", or "802.11" in its name and make note of it.
  4. Double click the network adapter and make note of the company by "Manufacturer:".

Get the wireless card driver

  1. Launch a web browser and search for the name of your wireless card, the manufacturer, and "wireless driver" in one query.
  2. Go to the manufacturer's official website in the search results.
  3. If you can't find the latest appropriate driver on the wireless card manufacturer's website, go to your computer manufacturer's website.
  4. After downloading the driver, install it.

Delete IllinoisNet profile

  1. Open the charms bar by swiping from the right edge of the screen. If you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer down.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select the Networks icon which is in the top-right corner of the bottom section.
  4. Press and hold or right-click IllinoisNet.
  5. Select Forget this network.

Configure wireless card

  1. Select the Start button.
  2. Type "Device Manager" and select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the tree Network adapters.
  4. Double click the network adapter.
  5. Select the Advanced tab if available.
  6. Modify the following settings if available (labeling may vary between wireless cards):
    • Roaming Aggressiveness/Tendency: Medium
    • Settings regarding Power or Performance: Prefer Maximum Performance over Power/Battery Saving
    • Transmit Power Output: Highest
  7. Select OK.

Configure IllinoisNet settings

  1. From the Start screen, type "Network and Sharing Center" and select Network and Sharing Center.
  2. On the right side of IllinoisNet, Select the link by "Connections:"
  3. Select Wireless Properties.
  4. Select the Security Tab.
  5. Modify the following settings:
    • Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    • Encryption Type: AES
    • Choose a network authentication method: Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • Remember my credentials for this connection each time I'm logged in: checked
  6. Select OK.
