Energy Cup Competition Promotes Conservation in Residence Halls

Champaign, Ill. – February 6, 2009 – University Housing is sponsoring a conservation contest for residents living in two undergraduate residence halls. The Energy Cup competition, which runs from February 15 to March 15, will increase residents’ awareness of energy usage while also providing some friendly competition.

Residents living in the four buildings within the Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Halls (Babcock, Blaisdell, Carr, and Saunders) will compete to see which of their buildings uses the least amount of electricity during the run of the contest. Likewise, residents in the two buildings within the Illinois Street Residence Halls (Townsend and Wardall) will also be striving to conserve the most energy between the two.

Residents received handouts with easy energy-saving tips to get them started on simple, everyday ways to “go green.” Some tips include: turn off your lights when you’re not home, unplug your cell phone and laptop chargers when you’re not charging, use compact fluorescent bulbs in your lamps and air dry laundry on a drying rack.

The winning hall from PAR and ISR will receive the Energy Cup trophy and its residents will be treated to a special meal.
