International Students

Whether you are an undergraduate student just beginning your studies, a doctoral student with many years of education, or a visiting scholar or faculty member, University Housing has a community for you.

International Student Housing Options

Living on campus is a great way to experience American college life, meet new friends, and get connected to all the University of Illinois has to offer.

Undergraduate Hall Options

If you will need to stay on campus over break periods, you may be interested in these options:

Please note: For residents who do not live in Illinois Street Residence Halls (ISR) or Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Halls (PAR), University Housing still offers temporary break housing options in these locations. Temporary break housing will also be offered at Snyder Hall for fall and spring breaks.

Upper-Division Graduate Hall Options

Typically for sophomores and above, these options offer longer stays and remain open during breaks:

  • Daniels Hall offers 12-month housing in addition to academic year option (May-to-May or August-to-August)
  • Sherman Hall offers 10-month housing (includes fall, winter, and spring breaks)

Apartment Options

If you are coming to campus with your family, are at a sophomore status or above, or are a graduate/professional student, we have apartment communities for your needs. The apartment communities have community aides who will help ease your transition to the campus, and offer programming for students and their families (including an on-site pre-school, after-school programs, and sponsored trips). See an overview of our apartment options.

Meal Plans and Dining Options

Meal plans are required for all students who live in our undergraduate residence halls. Although not required for graduate upper-division hall or apartment residents, many do purchase a meal plan for the value and convenience. You will choose a plan when you complete your online contract, and can also make changes after arriving.

Meal plans are accepted at all six University Housing dining halls, which offer all-you-care-to-eat ("classic") meals. These meals are like a buffet. Many entrees are available, as well as side dishes (such as vegetables, fruit, etc.), beverages, and a fresh salad bar. Students just swipe their i-card to use a classic meal, and then choose to eat whatever dishes they wish at a dining hall. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available at every meal, and our dietitian can assist you with any other special dietary needs you may have. See the Nutrition Services page to learn more.

Specialty Restaurants are specialty cuisines that are featured on specific days of the week in our dining halls.

A La Carte locations offer a la carte items, such as pre-made sandwiches, snacks, and beverages. At A La Carte locations you pay for each item individually with Cafe Credits, Extra Credits, or a credit card.
