About Timothy Nugent

Nugent Hall was named for Timothy J. Nugent, who founded the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1948. He is also recognized as a pioneer in campus accessibility.

Among his many accomplishments, he founded the National Wheelchair Basketball Association in 1949 and served as Commissioner for the first 25 years. He also founded Delta Sigma Omicron, a national rehabilitation service fraternity.

Nugent has lectured internationally and is recognized as a pioneer not only in campus accessibility, but also in architectural accessibility standards, public transportation, adaptive equipment, and recreation activities for people with disabilities.
