Housing has a full range of technology services for its residents. We operate sixteen computer labs— all open 24 hours a day, with approximately 325 computers and both color and black and white printers. In conjunction with CITES, Housing provides Ethernet networking to rooms in all residence halls. We also provide wireless network access in many common areas like dining halls, laundry rooms, and common areas and meeting rooms.
In our computer labs, staff members are available for assistance during posted hours–usually 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Residents are expected to abide by site rules, listed on large multi-color signs.
Networking to rooms, dubbed ResNet (University Residence Halls network), is an Ethernet network connecting residence halls with the campus network and the Internet. Housing offers a variety of ways of helping residents connect to the network which include: Choose Your Path DVD (mailed to parents of new incoming students mid-May, and online at www.housing.uiuc.edu/chooseyourpath), the "Steps to the Net" booklet placed in rooms for opening, URHnet Help Line at 244-1111, an online help request found at "Getting Help and Technology FAQ", and additional information located on the website. Student staff members, called NetTechs, respond to help requests by going to rooms.
It is the responsibility of URHnet users to conform to official policies implemented by the University. The primary goal of URHnet and the only reason it exists is to assist residents in their educational pursuits. It is understood that recreational uses are exercised but those considerations are not primary to management of the network and certain uses are inappropriate and possibly illegal.
As a URHnet user:
- Understand that you are responsible for whatever activity takes place on your computer or on the network in your room, either by yourself or others you allow to use it. Be assertive in saying “no” to others. Remember that there is a 24-hour computer lab in each hall or area to meet their needs.
- Behave responsibly and ethically, respecting the rights and privacy of others.
- Understand that it is illegal to distribute copyrighted materials such as commercial software applications, music files, etc.
- Become familiar with basic principles of unacceptable conduct. See information at "ResNet Policies".
- Don't give others unauthorized access to systems, software, services, or data.
- Don't engage in activities that interfere with the ability of others to use the network for educational purposes.
- Don't engage in commercial activity including solicitation, marketing, advertising, or recruiting.
- Don't exceed internet traffic limits. Visit "Bandwidth Policy" to find more details on Rate-Limiting. To watch your amount of traffic, see this web page provided by CITES.
- Install a virus scanner on your computer for protection. Free virus fighters are available for download from www.cites.uiuc.edu/software.
- DHCP devices and wireless routers are not allowed in residence halls due to interference with network connections in surrounding rooms.
