Spring 2010 room assignments will be sent to your Illinois email account during the last week of December.
Fall 2010 area assignments will be sent to your Illinois email account beginning in early June. The area assignment will include more Housing information and great tips on preparing to move in to your new home. Beginning in late July, you will be able to log into MyHousing to view your room and roommate information. International students will receive all correspondence by email.
As a new resident, your housing assignment is determined according to the date when your online contract is successfully completed. When you submitted your contract, you ranked your preferences (area, roommate, and room type) in the order of what is most important to you. We will do our best to honor your preferences, but please keep in mind that assignments are ultimately based on availability and the date your contract was received. Hall availability is also impacted by the selections made by our returning residents, who are assigned to rooms before new students. When you complete the University Residence Hall Contract, you agree to accept any available accommodations to which you are assigned.
When possible, we attempt to match roommates in the same class and college. However, you can request to be assigned with a friend. Do not wait to return your contract form to determine if a friend will be your roommate. You can add or change roommate preferences until May 15 without changing the date we initially received your online contract.
Mutual roommates must make the request in writing by May 15 (December 15 for contracts starting spring semester). Roommates will not be assigned together if only one person requests the other student as a roommate. Both students need to submit contracts by May 15. Roommate assignments are based on the date of the earlier contract. We are sorry that we are unable to accommodate requests for the same floor or same hall as another student.
Requesting a Roommate not Currently Living in University Housing
Send an email to the Housing Information Office to request a friend who is not currently living in the University Residence Halls. Your friend must submit a contract so it is received on or before May 15 for the fall semester and December 15 for the spring semester. S/he needs to submit the contract at least a week in advance of this date—much earlier if your roommate is living in another country. There must be a confirmed vacancy in your room for your friend as of May 15 for the fall semester, or December 15 for the spring semester, and your friend must list you as a roommate preference on her/his contract. Your friend should contact the Housing Information Office if they need more contract information.
Roommate Contact Information
The roommate contact information we provide is based on the phone number we have on record. If the number is incorrect, we encourage you to attempt directory assistance.
Room Changes
Please note, once fall semester hall assignments have been made in May, it is difficult to make changes.
If you would like to request a different hall, room, or roommate for fall semester, your request must be received in writing. We will respond to your request pending space availability. Requests are accommodated in the order that the contract was originally received.
From June 1 until July 10, 2009, you can submit a request online through the Waitlist/Change Request Form. After July 10, if you would still prefer to live in a hall or area other than the one you are currently assigned to, you can request a room change after all students in temporary housing are placed in a permanent housing space in the fall. Although all residence halls are full at the beginning of the term, some students cancel their contracts or simply do not show up, making extra rooms available. You can request a room change form from your area office, resident director, or resident advisor after you arrive on campus.
If you would like to request a room change that will start the spring semester, see your resident advisor (RA) who will submit your request to your resident director (RD) for approval. The deadline to submit this change request is the Friday before fall break begins, November 19, 2009 (the Friday before Thanksgiving).
Meal Plan Changes
Making a change to your meal plan is easy—simply complete the meal plan change form. Meal plans can be changed before the contract begins or you may wait until after you arrive on campus. During the fall semester, you may change to any meal plan up to two times between August 20 and September 23, 2009. After September 23, your meal plan may not be changed again until spring semester 2010. For the spring, you may change until February 3, 2010. Learn more about meal plans and how your credits roll over.
Canceling your contract to move into your fraternity/sorority or certified housing, or want to move to the University Residence Halls for the spring semester? If you wish to cancel your University Residence Hall contract based upon one of the reasons listed in section 4 of the Contract (pdf), complete the online contract cancellation form and send supporting documentation to the Housing Information Office (e.g., letter from your department verifying graduation, study abroad, or co-op). You will forfeit your $150 advance payment if you cancel after May 15 (or December 1 for the spring semester). For the spring semester, you If you are not canceling your contract for one of the reasons approved in section 4 of the Contract, you are subject to a $2,000 cancellation settlement charge.
If you have received information that you have not yet been assigned a room, or will be residing in Temporary Housing this fall, don't panic. We will have a space for you! New, incoming freshmen receive first priority and are guaranteed space in the University Residence Halls.
Temporary Housing Accommodations
Floor lounges in the University Residence Halls are converted to temporary rooms and are set up to accommodate 3-6 students per room. These lounges were student rooms at one time and are easily converted to a room. Each student receives a key to the temporary room and the room can be locked just like a regular student room. Students assigned to temporary housing receive a 50 percent reduced room rate (meal plan is at full rate) while they are living in a floor lounge. These lounges are equipped with the same furnishings provided in regular student rooms, with an extra-long twin bed, desk, desk chair, closet, and Internet connection for each student.
Moving to Permanent Housing
Our first priority is to find permanent housing assignments for students initially placed in temporary housing. Census is taken on the first day of classes (Monday, August 24). Students who have not checked in to their University Residence Hall assignment by August 24 will have their rooms assigned to someone else. Students in temporary housing will then be assigned to these openings created by no-show contracts. We will assign students out of temporary housing based on the date their contract was received.
