Disconnections
What Does Being Disconnected Mean?
Disconnecting is a method that Housing and the University use to enforce policies and prevent damage to our networks. Disconnects are done on a room-to-room basis. Your room will remain disconnected until the reason for the action has been resolved.
Reasons For Being Disconnected
Disconnecting a room is usually reserved for serious offenses. Most disconnections are done by CITES Security. While we may disconnect rooms for the most serious virus infections, typically disconnections are for violations of a University policy or other regulation (including legal code). The most common reasons for disconnections are copyright infringement, network abuse, or violation of other campus network policies. When a room is disconnected, an explanatory e-mail is sent to the student e-mail accounts of each student living in the room. Multiple offenses may result in stronger disciplinary action.
What To Do If You Are Disconnected
Instructions for how to resolve disconnections will be in an e-mail. Most disconnections are not resolvable by Housing PCCs or NetTechs, unless specifically mentioned in the e-mail. NetTechs generally can only confirm that you have been disconnected.
