Overview of major works, figures, and trends responsible for shaping dance as an evolving contemporary art form. The course will have lecture, viewing, discussion and experiential (studio participation) components. For non-dance majors. Participation in both lab and lecture sections is part of the course.

This course investigates a wide range of dance forms from around the globe. Drawing on some core ideas from cultural studies and etiology, students will locate the dance forms in their socio-cultural contexts. Thus, academic research and writing skills will be emphasized. There will also be opportunities for learning world dance in a studio setting. The pre-requisite for this course is Dance 440. However, interested students who do not have this prerequisite may apply for a waiver by sending the instructor a two-paragraph statement that explains why the student would like to take the course and provides information on the student's background in international studies, history, and/or dance. Waiver applications should be sent to sarahng@illinois.edu.

An introduction to the historical events and processes of change that shape the world from the 14th century to the present, this course will focus on the connection between local actions and the larger geopolitical environment. Themes will include European/non-European contact, capitalism as a system of production and distribution, nationalism, and the modern state. Discussion of key developments in history through analysis of primary sources will be an important part of this course. This course will give students the opportunity to engage in the historical method of inquiry, and to learn how to synthesize, analyze, and evaluate information. Can be used to fulfill either Western or Non-Western general education categories, but not both.
