Allen Hall/Unit One: A creative community in a small college environment

CERAMICS STUDIO

The Allen Hall ceramics lab houses 10 wheels and 3 kilns including a raku kiln for outdoor reduction firings. The lab also has a full dry materials room for endless glaze experimentation. The studio is located on the ground floor north of Allen Hall in room 89. Facilities are available to students enrolled in ceramics courses and residents who can demonstrate their ability to use the equipment properly. Contact Catherine Wiesener in room 98 across from the ceramics studio for information about classes or studio access.

PHOTOGRAPHY LAB

A fully equipped photographic darkrooms for the processing and printing of black and white photographs is located on the ground floor north. The photo lab is opened to students enrolled in Unit One photography courses and residents with darkroom experience. Use of the lab is available after an individual is checked out for instructions and procedures of the facility. Contact Brad Hudson in room 82 for details.

COMPUTER MUSIC LAB

Room 74 houses an electronic music project studio with two computer, two GM synthesizers, effects processors, mixer and  other devices of odd make. Students interested in using this equipment should enroll in the Electronic Music courses. Contact Jason Mitchell for more information.

DIGITAL VIDEO EDITING LAB

The Digital Video Editing Studio at Allen Hall is open to students and former students enrolled in the Allen Hall Moving Image Course Art 191.  We have four Apple Mac Workstations with the lastest Final Cut Studio Pro software. Two stations are Mac Pro's with added RAM and dual monitors and two stations are 24"  IMac's with one graphic tablet for rotoscoping and animation work. We also supply students enrolled in the class with Panasonic minidv video cameras, tripods, lighting equipment and various microphones. Students not enrolled in the class may gain access by demonstrating proficiency, however must provide their own camera, equipment and external hard drive.

MUSIC PRACTICE ROOMS

Three soundproof rooms are available for music practice; all have pianos. The practice rooms are located on the ground north floor in rooms 77 and 79. They may be used 24 hours a day and are available to all Allen Hall students. You don’t have to be taking music lessons to use the practice rooms. Pianos in the Main Lounge and the South Rec Room may be used for practice when it does not interfere with other Lounge activities. There are also electric pianos in rooms 64, 157 and 155a (back of Main Lounge). Students need to bring their own headphones to use them.

Room 155a in the northeast corner of the Main Lounge is a drum practice room. A full drumset and a practice pad set are available to all students. Several people set up their own drum sets in this room knowing that all students have access to using these drums. The Drum Room Policy Agreement is available at the Allen Hall front desk. All users of drums in this room must complete this agreement in order to check out keys to this room.

COMPUTER LAB

The microcomputer lab is located off the ground floor commons near the cafeteria and the hall library. The computers are networked into the Housing Division computer system and into the University’s mainframes so your own software is unnecessary. On-site assistants are available for guidance and troubleshooting. If you don’t have computer experience, the University offers short courses in operations and software. Information about these courses and other means of assistance are posted in the lab.

LIBRARY

The Allen Hall Library (located next to the cafeteria) is open Sunday – Thursday 4pm – 1am, and Fridays and Saturdays 2pm – 5pm. This irreverent library collection provides residents books, music, and CDs to support the wide range of students’ personal and cultural interests. On a practical note, the library is a convenient link to the campus's academic library system.

The Allen Library offers a number of useful materials and services, including:

  • Popular materials like those you’d find in a books store (magazines, music, films, popular novels)
  • Major and Career Guidance
  • A collection of art books
  • A convenient place to pick up requests for other campus library materials
  • A place to return University library materials.
  • Get course reserve materials
  • Individualized help searching for books and articles at the University Library and throughout the Illinois inter-library loan system
  • Writing and term paper guides
  • General encyclopedias & subject dictionaries

POSTER ROOM & OFFICE EQUIPMENT

Useful Office Supplies and Office equipment needed for creating posters and bulletin boards. Supplies include rolls of large poster paper, paper cutter, glue, staplers, markers, paints, scissors, etc. These items are available for student use but equipment must be used in the poster room.

Note: The photocopy machine located in room 73 is not for general use. A public photocopy machine is available near the laundry room.
