Resident Advisors

The Resident Advisor (RA) assumes an active leadership role in developing and maintaining a positive, inclusive, safe, and welcoming community environment within the residence halls for all students and their unique differences, cultures, and identities. The RA serves as a role model and resource person in assisting students in their education, personal growth, and sense of belonging and safety in the residence hall community and at the University of Illinois.

The Resident Advisor assists Multicultural Advocates, Residence Hall Directors, and students by being a(n):

  • Role model
  • Peer advisor
  • Resource person on issues of social identity and social justice
  • Student advocate
  • Educator

The daily life of a Resident Advisor includes but is not limited to:

  • Developing 1:1 positive relationships with all residents on floor and knows them on a personal level
  • Fostering a floor environment conducive to academic success and learning
  • Committing to developing a community that is safe, open, inclusive, and supportive for a diverse student population
  • Helping floor leaders and concerned residents understand their roles and advises them on policies, procedures, budgets, and timelines to carry out their plans or to address their concerns
  • Addressing the needs of underrepresented, international and special interest groups/students and works with paraprofessional and professional staff and campus resources to plan strategies to incorporate these students into the floor, hall, and university communities

This is achieved through:

  • Planning and implementing active/passive initiatives each semester
  • Participating in floor and hall events
  • Being knowledgeable about and referring students and staff to campus and community resources
  • Serving on Residential Life Committees as assigned
  • Attending RA staff development meetings on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m
  • Negotiating Living/Learning Community responsibilities, if any, with the Program Director of any of our ten (10) Living Learning Communities and the Residence Hall Director for 2-5 hours per week
